Description

  • The litterary cards, being a new invention to learn to read, and speedily acquire the greatest knowledge in calculation without pains or trouble... Wrote in French and English. London: for the author, 1758

folio (385 x 235mm), engraved frontispiece, woodcut device on title-page, parallel text in English and French, 20 engraved plates each containing 6 cards, some with hand-coloured hearts and diamonds, some printed in red, most cards with a small portrait in corner (e.g. the jacks depicting Garrick as theatrical characters), including cards with a map of the world, a multiplication table and music, a few cards blank, modern calf-backed boards with a facsimile of the title-page pasted to upper cover, slight offsetting from frontispiece, one small portrait excised from one card
