Catalogue Note

These grammatical cards were first issued in 1677 by John Seller and J. Hill (typeset with woodcuts, not fully engraved as here), and were based on William Lily's A short introduction to grammar. Each suit represents a section of Latin grammar: clubs are Etymologia, spades Orthographia, diamonds Prosodia, and hearts Syntaxis. This set has a red tax stamp on the king of spades.
