Catalogue Note

Shaw was a great admirer of Jascha Heifetz and attended the celebrated violinist's first performance in London on May 5th, 1920. He wrote to Heifetz a month later that the recital had filled him with anxiety: "If you provoke a jealous God by playing with such superhuman perfection, you will die young. I earnestly advise you to play something badly every night before going to bed instead of saying your prayers. No mere mortal should presume to play so faultlessly as that" (Collected Letters, ed. Dan H. Laurence, New York, 1985).
