Catalogue Note

This book was designed to be used in conjunction with astronomical playing-cards, also produced by Moxon; a set of the cards was sold in these rooms, 22 May 1967, together with this book, noted in the catalogue as "apparently the only copy known". Moxon and his son James also printed geographical playing cards and other educational sets of cards (see Mann, All cards on the table (Leinfelden-Echterdingen, 1991), 258). The last five pages contain "A catalogue of globes coelestial and terrestial, spheres, maps, sea-plats, mathematical instruments, and books, made and sold by Joseph Moxen [sic] on Ludgate Hill at the Sign of Atlas".

Rare. ESTC lists only three copies, at Christ Church Oxford, the University of California (both with the cards), and Yale University. Another edition was published in 1692, the year after Moxon's death.
