[with:] drafts and retained copies of the Maharaja’s letters to Gandhi (c.8 items), telegrams from the Governor General, Vallabhbhai Patel, and others relating to the gift of funds for Noakhali, a typed letter signed by Vallabhbhai Patel concerning the Punjab Relief Fund (1 page, 19 March 1947) and related material, and other letters to the Maharaja and related printed matter, mostly requesting money, c.80 items in total, 1947, nicks and tears, some items fragile

Catalogue Note

A group of letters written in the weeks after Independence, relating to Gandhi's response to the terrible communal violence that scarred the subcontinent at that time. The Maharaja Shri Bhojrajji, Maharaja of Gondal (in Gujarat), was one among many wealthy Indians who pledged money to support Gandhi's work.  Apparently unpublished.
