Catalogue Note

The present work is a study for Lewis' s large-scale watercolour, Easter Day at Rome - Pilgrims and Peasants of the Neapolitan States awaiting the benediction of the Pope at St Peter's.This exists in two versions, both dated 1840: one at the Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery;  the other, showing only the middle section of the composition, and reputedly the one exhibited at the Old Water Colour Society in 1841, now in Northampton Art Gallery. The subject of the present watercolour is the woman depicted in the centre of the large composition, although in a slightly different pose. Several other figures, including the pilgrim with the scallop shell badge on his cloak, are also evident. Lewis was in Rome from late 1838 to 1840, before travelling on to Greece and Istanbul.

We are grateful to Briony Llewellyn for her kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work.
