Description

  • A pair of European silk and gilt-metal appliqúe and nué work ecclesiastical panels, with central Biblical narrative scenes
  • applique and nue work in silk and satin with metal-thread detailing
  • frame (approx.): 57.3 by 69cm., 22 1/2 by 27 1/5 in., textile (approx.) 44 by 55cm., 17 by 22in.
each panel worked with applique in green, red, yellow and cream silk, with metal-thread edging and detailing, against a blue satin ground, with a central applique cartouche enclosing nué work scene of ecclesiastical figures; both panels later mounted within glass panels, with narrow frame applied with gold braid around top four edges

Condition

Each panel has been professionally restored. There are small areas of repair to the satin ground and the satin applique motifs, in threads that compliment the original woven satin. The blue ground of both panels has some areas of proficient stabilising, only noticeable on close inspection. The central cartouche has areas of wear to the cream coloured motifs on each axis. The nué work panels have some repairs, and consolidation to the light surrounding threads of the figures. The faces show the original foundation textile, highlighting the facial features. There are slightly irregular edges to each panel, with some of the foundation textile visible. Both panels later mounted within glass panels, with narrow frame applied with gold braid around top four edges. The textile panels are not lined and the repair stitches are visible through the support linen of the textile. One glass frame has strip of card, hoops and wire for hanging attached to the reverse of glass panel, the other lacking this hanging device and with residue glue. These are highly decorative and evocative survivors of early ecclesiastical textile production.
