Description

  • Profile relief of an Emperor, probably Vespasian
  • white marble, within an oval painted wood wall hanging
  • Italian, Rome, 17th century

Condition

The condition of the marble is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some veining to the marble, visible on the Emperor's right jaw, cheek and ear, consistent with the material. There are some very small inclusions to the surface, again consistent with the material. There is some minor paint deposit throughout, particularly at the back of the neck and head, underneath the eye and to the nose. There is a small loss at the eyebrow. There is some dirt to the crevices. There is paint loss and wear to the reverse of the wood, with some chips to the edges and stable splitting.
