Condition

Overall the condition is good with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age and some dust to the crevices. There is some slight roughness due to spotting and slight greening throughout the surface. The patina is somewhat rubbed at the high points, including the nose, shoulders, and edges of the truncation. There are several slight scratches to the patina, including an area to the reverse at the proper left shoulder. A small round hole was cast in at the reverse.

Catalogue Note

The present bust is very close to a Roman 1st-century BCE/ CE marble herm bust of Dionysos in 5th-century BCE style in the British Museum (inv. no. 1805,0703.65).
