  • St. John the Evangelist
  • bronze on a tinted wood base

Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age, with particular dirt to the crevices. There is an area of greening to the proper right side of the base and a scratch to the reverse, near his proper left hip. The reverse is roughly finished. There is a small hole to the drapery on the proper left side of the base due to a casting flaw. There is wear and dirt to the base, particularly at the corners. The left back corner has been chipped.

Catalogue Note

Compare with the set of Venetian, circa 1580-1590, bronze figures of the Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in the Bode Museum, Berlin (inv. nos. 1755, 1756, 1757 and 1758). Also note the Venetian, late- 16th-/ early- 17th-century bronze statuette of St. John the Evangelist offered in these rooms on 21 April 1988.
