Description

  • A study of two hands
  • indistinctly signed lower left: DY
  • oil on canvas, unframed
  • 38 x 32 cm

Condition

The picture is lighter in colour and fresher in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has a relatively recent relining. The paint surface is in very good condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint visible to the naked eye except for a very minor depression in the canvas caused by an old abrasion upper left which is visible in the catalogue illustration. The paint is thin in places i.e. the upper right where the ground is visible however this appears to be intentional to the study and not relative to conditon issues. There is some minor surface dirt overall. Examination under ultraviolet reveals several campaigns of old retouching, the oldest being strengthening to the grey area on the left. There is also retouching to a small horizontal surface scratch in the grey area measuring approx. 2 in. parallel to the middle finger of the upper hand, however this does not compromise the integrity of the paint surface. There is some strengthening visible in the painted background and there are very minor scattered flecks of cosmetic retouching throughout the fleshtones of both hands. There is some further more recent retouching to the lower canvas edge. The picture is offered unframed.
