Catalogue Note

Already Been In A Lake of Fire (Notebook Volume 38) is a complex undertaking by the artist Walid Ra'ad and the fictional collective of his own creation, the Atlas Group, to document Lebanon's tumultuous contemporary history. This series aims to quantify the level of destruction and violence in modern day Lebanon and to explore how the imagery of a history is created.

Conceptual and documentary in nature, the effort is pioneered by the fictional and deceased Dr. Fadl Fakhouri, whose notebooks were donated to the Atlas Group at the time of his death. In the forward to Notebook Volume 38, Dr. Fakhouri writes:

"This notebook contains 145 cutout photographs of cars. They correspond to the exact make, model, and color of every car that was used as a car bomb between 1975 and 1991...as well as text written in Arabic that details the place, time and date of the explosion, the number of casualties, the perimeter of destruction, the exploded car's engine and axle numbers, and the weight and type of the explosives used."
