Condition

Condition: This work is in very good condition. There are some handling marks and various labels affixed to the copper surface, all of which are inherent to the artist's working process. Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is slightly darker due to the additional handling marks that have occurred during transport. There are also three additional labels affixed to the surface from when the work was shot, which in keeping with the artist's intention.

Catalogue Note

Walead Beshty’s artistic œuvre is dedicated to the industrial processes which surround the production, consumption, and transportation of contemporary art. The present work, a solid 18-inch copper cube modeled after the exact dimensions of a FedEx box, is shipped raw, uncrated via FedEx to and from each location, and each waybill is placed directly on the surface of the piece. The accrued handling marks, labels and oxidation stains are beautiful accretions of chance and imperfections as proof of the work’s passage through time and space, positioning the work to be in a constant state of creation. The title of the work follows this state of flux—each shipment’s tracking number, shipment locations, and dates are included—and contributes to the overall obsession and main exploration for the artist. Each box stands as “a way to materialize that change of context [from one exhibition space to another]. In this sense the marks are an analogy for the transformation of the object based on the accumulation of symbolic value.” (The artist in conversation with Mikkel Carl, 2010)
