Catalogue Note
In a vibrant composition that recalls traditional West African tapestries, Pascale Marthine Tayou combines multi-coloured chalk and charcoal in a carefully orchestrated pattern that forms a cohesive whole. The inherently ephemeral charcoal juxtaposed with the almost sculptural solidity of the coloured chalk creates a dynamic interplay between light and dark. Tayou sees this in terms of a harmonising balance between the different sides of his character, describing the work as 'my Ying and Yang'.
Tayou’s oeuvre centres around his deeply held belief that art and life are inextricably linked. He actively recycles and reuses objects from his life transforming his works into self-referential meditations on the artistic process. His work also seeks to reconcile his cultural origins in West Africa with the European culture of his adopted home in Belgium, manifesting itself in an exploration of personal cultural identity in an increasingly globalised world.
In Chalk or Charcoal T his use of the chalk as a physical object rather than a medium for drawing combines with the structural allusion to the traditional crafts of his homeland to transform the work into an intimate exploration of his role as an artist and his position within a global culture.
