Catalogue Note

Small Gut 2 II is an example of Gormley’s use of scale and is part of his extensive enquiry into the body/space dialectic which has earned him a quasi-canonical authority within the realm of contemporary sculpture. Using stacked, propped and cantilevered rectangular masses of compressed iron, Small Gut 2 II hunches forward, revealing the ‘tension between a possible symmetry and the actual articulation of a body. Very slight variations in the alignment of the blocks contribute to the total body feeling’. (The artist, 2011). The works that comprise the artist’s ‘Blockwork’ series challenge the viewer’s proprioception by translating the body into architectural volumes and attempt to catalyse the beholder’s awareness of inhabiting space at large. The intense dark patina dramatically heightens the work’s presence.
