Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate. Condition: This work is in very good condition. Very close inspection reveals a few hairline tension cracks running intermittently along the extreme outer edges. Raking light reveals isolated networks of thin and unobtrusive cracks in places. There is a small spot of loss towards the centre of the composition. Further extremely close inspection reveals some very faint and unobtrusive drip marks toward the lower left corner only apparent when viewed under ultra-violet light. No restoration is apparent when examined under ultra-violet light.

Catalogue Note

“I don’t believe that there will ever be a state of paradise in art. Art is not the fulfilment of paradise; it is more a symbol of longing for paradise, an eternal desire. After our transformation from material to immaterial existence, we have the chance to achieve transformation and fulfilment, a kind of final abstraction.”

The artist talking to Pamela Kort in: Male Lago, Jörg Immendorff, Cologne, 2005, p. 45.
