Catalogue Note

Influenced by her previous experiences in natural resource conservation, Laurel Roth uses traditional techniques of carving, embroidery and collage to transform everyday or natural materials in works that are often both beguilingly beautiful and playfully irreverent. Her work focuses on the problematic interactions between humans and the natural world in pieces that challenge our conceptualisation of nature.

Roth has shown widely in the United States and abroad, including a show at the Museum of Art and Design in New York. Her work has been included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian and the 21C Museum among others. She is represented by Schroeder Romero Gallery in New York City, Packer Schopf Gallery in Chicago and Gallery Wendi Norris in San Francisco where her solo exhibition Flight of the Dodo is currently on view.

In the present work Roth transforms a range of manufactured beauty products into a thing of beauty in its own right and in placing objects so intimately related to human beauty in the context of natural mating rituals Roth forces us to contemplate anew the strangeness of humanity’s contrived rituals.
