Description

  • Profile relief of King Louis XIV of France
  • white marble, on a veined red and green marble roundel, in a later polychromed wood frame
  • French, probably 18th century
carved with the emblem of the Sun King

Condition

Overall the condition of the marble is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few small chips and losses, including to the tip of the top laurel wreath, to the edge below the shoulder and to the tip of the nose. There is minor veining consistent with the material and there are a few small naturally occurring inclusions, including one below the bridge of the nose. Some of the curls in the hair terminate abruptly at the edge, suggesting the relief may have been cut away from a larger surround. There is veining to the marble background, including one or two stable slightly open veins running through the bottom right side. These veins are open to the reverse, and one terminates in a loss. It is possible, though unlikely, that there may have been a fracture here. There is minor stable splitting to the wood frame, consistent with material.

Catalogue Note

The fact that Louis XIV is represented here with a small moustache suggests that the portrait is based on a 17th-century model. The Sun King's fashion preferences were so well documented that we know he was only sporting a moustache between 1658 and 1686. A similar representation of Louis XIV, cast in glass by Bernard Perrot around 1680, was offered at Christie's London, 18 December 1995, lot 116.
