Condition

Both pictures are slightly darker and less acidic in colour than the catalogue illustration would suggest. Both canvases have been lined. The paint surface of her is in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint. There is a slighlty blanching varnish overall as well as surface dirt. Examination confirms the presence of discoloured varnish which impedes inspection but reveals minimal further interention. The paint surface of him appears to be in good overall condition, however a discoloured vanrish and surface dirt predominate and there is evidence of an old abrason in his left elbow and there is a minor paint loss lower right in the dog's snout. Examination under ultrviolet reveals several further very minor scattered retouchings including some strengtheing to the base of the column.
