Commissioned by James Hugh Smith-Barry (1748-1837) for Marbury Hall, Cheshire;
Thence by descent at Marbury Hall, Cheshire and later Fota House, Ireland.

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative. The canvas has been relined and the paint surface appears to be in good overall condition apart from surface dirt and a discoloured varnish overall. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the varnish and reveals a few very minor flecks of scattered retouching but othewise there appears to be minimal intervention and the picture appears to be in good country house condition. Offered in a thin gilt wood slip frame in good overall condition.

Marbury Hall came into the possession of the family through Lady Elizabeth Savage (d. 1714), daughter of Richard Savage, 4th Earl Rivers (c.1660-1712) and his wife Penelope Downes. She married, as his second wife, Lieutenant-General James Barry, 4th Earl of Barrymore (1667-1748).
