Provenance

The Collection of Henry Nyburg until sold;
Sotheby's London, 25 November 1966, lot 194 and lot 195

Condition

This lot is really lovely and generally in good order. Both sets are good examples of a type and are complimentary. The shaped backs are in generally good condition, evincing cracks and scratching appropriate with their age, material and use, though the set with padded feet is in somewhat better order. The examples with claw and ball feet have some areas of restoration, notable breaks or fractures to two of the chairs back legs. There are also some areas of patching to veneer. The floral embroidery shows signs of wear but is stable, there are areas where the embroidery has re-worked. Under the embroidered drop-in seats modern strengthening batons have added. Both sets of chairs as a whole display signs of wear, scuffing and cracking commensurate with their age, particularly to the feet, together with signs of worm. Approximate measurements: 108cm. high, 53cm wide, 52cm. deep; 3ft. 6½in., 1ft. 9in., 80½in.
