Catalogue Note

This extraordinary frame relates to the very best Dutch frames produced in the 17th century. It features devices seen on two documented frames which are illustrated P. J. J. Van Thiel and C. J. Bruyn Kops, Framing in the Golden Age, Zwolle, 1995. These decorative flourishes of foliate motifs enclosing cherubs relate to those framing Gerard Hoet's 'A Couple with Three Children' form circa 1675 and the profusion of boldly scrolled leaves appear on the frame of Cornelis Jonson Van Ceulen II's 'Sara Fannius', circa 1683 (op. cit. p.309 and p.339).
