Condition

In overall good conserved condition. The shield appears to have had some restoration. The stem of the spear is possibly a later replacement and the left arm has a hairline crack and possibly shows evidence of a previous restoration. Some miniscule chips to the base which are hardly noticeable.

Catalogue Note

Karl Schwerzek in his explanation (1904) states: `Athena jumps out of Zeus’s head in her complete armour as a warlike goddess of thunder and victory. To my mind Phidias found the inspiration for this scene in Homers lyrical verses about the event. '
