Catalogue Note
For an English `Fish Quay' tapestry, with the present figural composition on the far left side, see H. C. Marillier, English Tapestries of the Eighteenth Century, London, Medici Society, 1930, pg. 102, pl.41. The complete composition was from a set of English `Teniers' tapestries for the Duke of Portland, woven by the Soho workshop of Vanderbank. The English 18th century workshops took up the popular Flemish `Teniers' subjects and this particular composition of the `Fish Quay', shows elements of design inspiration from the version, in reverse, undertaken in the late 17th century by the Brussels workshop of Le Clerc and J. van der Borcht (`A Castro'), with the distinctive walled town extending into the distance.
