- Two tortoiseshell and gold piqué snuffboxes, Naples, circa 1760
- tortoiseshell, gold, vellum (miniature)
- 8.2cm., 3 1/4 in. wide
rectangular, decorated in gold piqué point et posé, the first with a palace within scroll borders on the lid, overall scroll pattern on the sides and base, the second, shaped, with an overall scroll pattern, the interior enclosing an English miniature of the Virgin, by Thomas Worlidge (1700-1766), each with gold mounts and shell thumbpiece
Condition
the first example: gold mount detached from box, some restoration to rim of lid, some minute loss to gold decoration to bottom left corner of lid, but still good condition.
the second example, with some tortoiseshell missing to right corner of lid, hinge probably replaced, some losses to decoration to base, both with some minor lifting to gold decoration.
