- 76 by 62.7 cm.; 29 7/8 by 24 3/4 in.
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 20 December 1973, lot 11, to Lacy for 150 guineas.
Condition
The picture is slightly lighter in colour and tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has been relined and the paint surface appears to be in good overall condition however the grey of the background is thin in places. There is also evidence of a varnish and there are localised areas of surface dirt. The is some minor discoloured retouching to the background too around the column. There is no apparent damage or loss of paint except for a minor old abrasion to a button lower left and the uppermost stretcher bar is visible under a raking light. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the varnish. There does not seem to have been much intervention apart from to the afroemtnioned areas and the picture appears to be in good country house condition. Offered in a gitl wood and plaster frame in good overall condition.
