Condition

Overall the condition is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is some stable splitting, in particular, a split running through the centre of the body, which has been partially concealed with paint, and a split to the back of the head. The sculpture is carved in sections and joints are visible. Both arms are carved separately and paint has been used to conceal the joints. The proper left arm may be reattached and there are restorations to the joints, including at the bottom edge. The paintwork is partially refreshed. There are losses to the paint to the back and to the back of the neck and head. There is craquelure to the paint throughout, including to the face. There is slight yellowing to the nose and forehead. There is a lacuna to the saint's abdomen at the proper right side, behind the wrist. There are small losses and splits to the reed; the red ground is partially visible. The reed is a little loose. There is wear to the gilding around the original base, including craquelure, and the right back corner is carved separately. There is wear to the modern base, which is carved in sections, including splitting.
