with two old paper labels to the underside of the vessel respectively inscribed: 3003.4 in blue ink and: M513 in pencil and with illegible ink inscriptions to the underside of the lid

Condition

Overall the condition of the pewter is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is a particular area of wear to the surface at the side of the belly of the vessel (left side when viewed from the front), and another to the top of the lid on the left. There are small nicks and scratches throughout, particularly to the handle. There are various solder marks, including to the underside of the lid. There are white residues around the hinge. There is some minor warping including to the edges of the foot and lid.

Compare with the 18th-century Swiss 'Schenkanne' published by Hornsby, which similarly has a hinged lid adorned with two acorns (op. cit. p. 217, no. 721).
