Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface. There is a large open casting flaw/ fissure behind the proper left ear. There are a few further original casting flaws, including in the paws, mane and tail. There are a few original casting plugs, including in the proper left ear and at the anus. There are small nicks and scratches throughout, particularly to the back. There are a few spots of greening and some dark staining to the surface.

Catalogue Note

The present aquamanile is cast after a Lower Saxon late 14th/ early 15th century model. A similar example is in the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum (inv. no.  2494).
