Condition
The lead lot is slightly lighter in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. Both canvases have been relined. The paint surface on him is in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for some very minor scattered abrasions visible only upon close inspection. There is also surface dirt and a discoloured varnish overall. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the thick varnish which makes inspection diffiucult, but there do not appear to be any retouchings and the picture is in good country house condition. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame in good overall condition. The paint surface of her, appears to be in fair condition. There is evidence of retouching to an old triangular tear lower centre. There are also scattered minor retoucings in the peripheral areas including to the background, visible under a raking light, which includes retouching to a minor vertical surface scratch measuring approx 3 in. parallel to the sitter's head. There is also surface dirt and a discoloured vanrish overall. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the varnish which makes inspection difficult however there are additional areas of retouching to an area of damage lower right in her dress and likewise to her dress lower left, however the principle parts, namely the fleshtones, seem to be in good overall condition. Offered in a gold painted wood and plaster frame in fair condition.
