Condition

Both pictures are slightly less acidic in colour and they are fresher in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest amd both canvases have been relined. The first (as illustrated on the right in the catalogue) is in fair condition. the paint is thin in places and there are some scattered retoucingings visivle along the upper canvas edge. There is an euneven craquelure, surface dirt and a blanching varnish overall. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the presence of the discoloured varnish and reveals old scattered minor retoucings in the background however these are hard to discern through the varnish. There is also some minor infilling to craquelure in the face, The second (as illustrated on the left in the catalogue) appears to be in fair overall condition. There is likewise an uneven craquelure, surface dirt and a mottled varnish overall and there is evidence of old retouching to the background above her head and to the fleshtones of her chest. Examination under ultraviolet reveals retoucing to the background, by the upper and left hand canvas edges. There is also some minor retoucing to the costumes, the faces and hands however this is again obscured by the varnish and surface dirt. Both canvases are in fair country house condition. Both are offered in unmatching gilt wood and plaster frames.
