Ecrit dans les années 1895-1900, cet essai romanesque ne fut publié qu'en 1952 par Bernard de Fallois. Proust ne s'est jamais servi du titre que lui a donné son premier éditeur, mais c'est bien sous le titre de Jean Santeuil qu'il reste aujourd'hui encore dans nos bibliothèques.
