Zola choisit pour cadre à son roman un grand magasin : il visite Le Bon marché (qui servit de modèle), Le Louvre, La Place Clichy ; il observe la faillite des petites boutiques, étudie les mécanismes de l'expropriation, demande à l'architecte Frantz Jourdain de lui décrire l'intérieur de son "bazar moderne" (future Samaritaine), observe les employés et les clientes.
