Pour le neuvième roman de la série des Rougon-Macquart, Zola s'inspira pour son héroïne de Blanche d'Antigny, célébre cocotte du Second Empire. Dès sa parution, le 15 février 1880, Nanaconnut un succés considérable, et fut édité à 50 000 exemplaires par Charpentier.
