Cet ouvrage, rare et recherché, est le seul roman publié par Lassailly, qui fut un temps collaborateur de Balzac. Ce texte s’inscrit dans la lignée des œuvres "frénétiques" entre parodie, extravagance et dénonciation de la société romantique. Cette sorte d'autobiographie excentrique qui annonce les noirceurs d’un Lautréamont est l’œuvre d’un curieux personnage dont Alfred Vigny, qui fut son ami et l'un de ses rares soutiens, trace un portrait lucide, à la date du 12 mai 1840, dans le Journal d’un poète : "Lassailly est un désolant exemple des supplices d'un travail excessif dans une organisation faible. Le goût très fin des lettres, développé outre mesure dans ce jeune homme, la fréquentation des plus hautes intelligences lui ont donné le désir violent d'atteindre la plus grande supériorité intellectuelle".
