- Lettre autographe signée à un abolitionniste anglais. Marine Terrace, 29 February 1854. 2 pages sur 1 feuillet in-12 monté sur onglet. Chemise maroquin bleu nuit orné d’un encadrement de filets dorés avec fleurons d’angle rocaille, le 1er plat frappé au centre des initiales de V. Hugo, dentelle intérieure de même motif doré, contreplat supérieur orné d’un portrait de Hugo gravé sur acier par Pollet et tiré sur Japon appliqué, dos lisse muet (G. Vauthrin).Mauvaise conservation avec acidification, mais parfaitement lisible ; pliures ; infimes déchirures, sinon luxueusement présenté par Germain Vauthrin (1848-1922).

At this time, Sir, I am receiving from the generous English people, a crowd of testimonies of adherence on the subject of the punishment of Death.
Yours so nobly expressed is one of those which have most powerfully affected me.
Congratulate in my name, I beg of you and thank for their holy benevolence the honourable English citizens who are about to take part in the meeting which you have done me the honour to announce to me. I shall be among you in heart and soul. It is worthy of the great English nation to understand that social questions are superior to political questions, and questions of humanity are above political [biffé ; ajout en interligne :] social questions.
Questions of humanity are under another name divine questions -
You, You, men of life, men of peace create in England the great and holy human agitation. The gallows is the poisonous tree under whose shadow societies perish. Tear it down -
Dear fellow citizen of the great republic of men, I shake you fraternally by the hand - Victor Hugo
According to the enquiries I have made, there had not been an execution in Guernesey for 24 years. In November 1830 a man named Beasse*** was hung. The gallows had not been erected since that period-”.
