Le premier plat de la couverture est orné d’une composition en couleurs (cliché rehaussé à la main) de Charles Filiger (1863-1928), déjà sollicité par Gourmont et Jarry pour le premier numéro de L'Ymagier. La préface fut demandée à Huysmans en hommage au chapitre de A rebours où les auteurs latins, dits mineurs, avaient été mis en avant.
