Catalogue Note
La campagne de promotion de cet ouvrage fut quasi inexistante. "Quand nous fîmes nos comptes avec Dumineray ... nous avions vendu une soixantaine d'exemplaires" (Journal, décembre 1851). Les Goncourt ne l'ont d'ailleurs jamais renié : "notre premier enfant, si choyé, si caressé, travaillé et retravaillé pendant un an, oeuvre incomplète ... mais originale jusqu'à l'étrange pour une première oeuvre" (idem).
