Condition
Very good condition overall with minor wear and a few scratches to the patina. Some minor surface dirt in the crevisses. Very attractive and desirable bronze.

Catalogue Note
La composition, représentant Pluton saisissant Proserpine en présence de Cerbère, illustre le cinquième livre des Métamorphoses d'Ovide dans lequel il est narré que Pluton, touché par une flèche de Cupidon s'éprit de Proserpine et l'enleva à la garde de sa mère Cérès pour la conduire aux Enfers gardés par Cerbère, le chien tricéphale. Le cardinal Scipion Borghese commanda en 1621 au sculpteur romain Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) le modèle original, en marbre, du présent groupe. La virtuosité technique, les multiples angles de vue et le prodigieux dynamisme du groupe, alors exposé à la villa Ludovisi, en firent un objet d'admiration. Il fut souvent reproduit à plus ou moins grande échelle en bronze durant les XVII et XVIIIe siècles.
