Condition

The cup is in very good condition overall. Minor traces of oxydation are visible to the mount. A few minor scraches and dents consistent with age and handling. It is a very rare and attractive piece.

Catalogue Note

Le jaspe de Madagascar fut décrit de manière fort poétique par Roger Caillois dans L'Ecriture des pierres comme une "pierre à image", c'est à dire une pierre qui par les propriétés naturelles de sa composition et de ses couleurs porte une dimension spirituelle. Ce jaspe caractérisé par l'opposition entre les vastes surfaces blanches et les petits orbicules était selon lui une évocation du cosmos qui lie l'infiniment petit à l'infiniment grand.
