shown standing forward, its neck arched and head raised up, eyes wide open, with manes and tufts of hair combed, with bedding and bags of provisions tied and slung between the two humps; together with a painted pottery horse head and a head of a young attendant, Han dynasty (5)

Provenance

Collection of  Jesse Clyde Nichols (1880-1950) and thence by descent.
The head of an attendant: C.T. Loo, New York, 27th February 1934.

Condition

The camel has been broken through the legs, neck and base and restored back together. There is some restoration to the protruding elements of the camel's load and some typical flaking and loss to the painted surface. Horse's head has some chips to the mane and typical wear and loss to the painted surface. The head of young attendant's dressed hair has been broken off and restored. There is typical wear and loss to the painted surface.
