Catalogue Note

Traditionally these storage chests were designated as seal chests; a container for scholarly implements such as inks, brushes and seals. But the form, with hinged doors, and rising lid with an interior tray and drawers is known from excavated exmples dating back to the Tang dynasty and contained a variety of valuables, cosmetics, clothing and Buddhist relics. Certainly the handles attest to their frequent mobility and the use of the valuable wood speaks to the both the status of the owner and significance of the contents whether scholarly or otherwise.
