the rounded sides carved in low relief with two large archaistic taotie masks divided by ingot-shaped flanges, flanked by a pair of stylized flower-head handles suspending loose rings, the flattened finial formed as a curled horned dragon, the splayed foot surrounded by a band of petal lappets, the stone of an olive-green color suffused with darker greenish black speckles (2)

Provenance

Collection of Albert J. Wright, Buffalo, New York circa 1940, and thence by descent.

Condition

The censer with sections of the foot that has been broken and glued back, with associated small chips and cracks. There is a 1 1/2 in. (4.4 cm) restored section and minor nicks to the rim. One ring handle has been restored. The interior of the cover with a restored patch to the rim with associated 2 in. (5 cm) long filled crack, and another filled crack approximately 3 1/4 in. (8.2 cm) long. There are some minor nicks around the rim.
