carved around the exterior with a scene of a mountainous riverscape, depicting a figure in a small boat and a dog in front of a pavilion, the foreground carved with pine trees and gnarled trunks forming the handle, the interior carved in high relief with three chilong, the horn a dark reddish brown color bearing a signature under the rim Wenshu Zhi

Provenance

Acquired in the early 20th century by American missionaries in China and thence by descent.

Condition

The top section of the handle is missing, and there are scattered chips around the rim. An area of the lower section approx. 2 1/2 in. by 1 in. (6.2 cm by 2.5 cm) has been off and reattached. There is a vertical split to the interior rising from the base approx. 2 in. (5.1 cm) long. Overall the patina is quite dry.
