each standing foursquare with head turned to the side, the trunk curled upwards between the tusks, the body in white with gilt-spots, bearing an elaborate saddle-cloth and howdah decorated with precious objects and lotus scrolls, supporting a ribbon-tied vase and cover, all in turquoise, red, yellow and green enamels  

Provenance

Acquired on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, in the 1960s, with an orginal bill of sale from a shop in Canton, dated 1867.
