Description

  • Zhang Daqian (Chang Dai-chien, 1899-1983)
  • PINE VALLEY IN MOUNT HUANG
  • ink and colour on paper, hanging scroll
with one seal of the artist

Inscription:
Going to Mount Huang from Shexian involves passing through Tangkou and climbing up to Zhiyun (Purple Clouds) Temple, Ciguan (Mercifui Light) Temple and Manjusri Temple where Tiandu (Capital of Heaven) Peak and Lianhua (Lorus) Peak can be seen on the left and right, with Yuping (Jade Screen) Peak close behind. The vast expanse of rippling clouds is a spectacular sight. This is attested by the Ming couplet “’When the mind is still wondering if it’s a ride on the sun and the moon, The body has already come to the Penglai immortal land.” This is known as the Qianhai lFront Sea). Setting out from Taiping (Great Peace) Hill, one passes through Qingliang (Pure and Cool)Terrace and Shizi (Lion) Forest from Song (Pine) Valley and climbs up Shixin (Start to Believe) Peak to look down on Shisun (Stone Bamboo-shoot) Bridge and Sanhua (Scattering Flowers) Ravine. The numerous rocks there in close resemblance to all sorts of creatures and things are justtoofantastic to describe. This is Houhai lRear Sea). To depict the Pine Valley in this painting, the methods of Shanqiao (W^ng Meng) have been used to show its lushness and luxuriance. Yuan.
