Description

  • Zhang Daqian (Chang Dai-chien, 1899-1983)
  • SPRING MELANCHOLY
  • ink and colour on paper, framed, 1944
with three seals of the artist, and one collector's seal

Inscription:
Happiness is like calamus flowers;
Yet rarely are they seen in bloom.
I want to change into a creek of spring,
Just to see how my man changes his heart.
The Ziye ge (Mid-night Song), which I composed when I was young, was casually written on this painting, Sixteenth day of the eleventh lunar month of the jiashen year, lodging in Shahe Village, Dai-chien Chang Yuan.

Condition

- Mild oxidization could be found at the ladies' face. Signs of retouching could be found at the collar area. Light abrasion could be found the at the painting's surface. Otherwise, generally in good condition.
