The singer Aristide Bruant was an imposing figure of Parisian nightlife, with his characteristic red scarf, walking stick and black beret and cloak. Lautrec conveyed the performer's strong character in several posters he designed to promote Bruant's performances at various cafés/cabarets in the bohemian quarter. Of these, the 'Ambassadeurs' is the most important. Bruant viewed the work a masterpiece and refused to perform at the cabaret unless it was prominently displayed flanking the stage. It was soon to be seen on billboards throughout Paris.
