Cette affiche est emblématique du travail d’Henri de Toulouse Lautrec affichiste : située au Divan Japonais café-concert parisien, Lautrec centre la scène sur l’artiste Jane Avril et le critique littéraire Edouard Dujardin, et non pas, comme on pourrait s'y attendre, sur Yvette Guilbert, en train de se produire sur scène, nous plaçant sur le même plan que les spectateurs.

This lithograph, representative of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s work as a poster designer, depicts a view of the Parisian café ‘Le Divan Japonais’.  Lautrec portrays the artist Jane Avril and the literary critic Edouard Dujardin, rather than the stage, where Yvette Guilbert sings, thus placing us at the same viewpoint as the audience.

The full sheet, printed to the edges on two sides, the colours slightly attenuated, two skilfully repaired paper losses in the left margin and in the lower sheet edge at right (below the hand and below the chair), a diagonal repaired tear at right of the signature, tiny paper loss in the elbow, these repairs touched in in places, occasional small creases and tears in the image and margins, occasional nicks at sheet edges, backed with a thin sheet of japan paper, framed.
