Lors de l’été 1895, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec embarque sur le bateau Le Chili, en direction de Bordeaux où il rencontre une jeune femme, passagère de la cabine 54, qui part retrouver son mari au Sénégal. Fasciné par sa beauté, il décide de rester sur le bateau jusqu’à Lisbonne, et la représente dans cette affiche.

During the summer of 1895, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec travelled on the boat Le Chili to Bordeaux. He met a young woman, a passenger in cabin no. 54, who was on her way to Senegal to find her husband. He was so fascinated by her beauty that he decided to stay on the boat until Lisbon and represented her in this lithograph.

The full sheet, printed to the edges on two sides, with a horizontal central fold, another softer horizontal fold above this, a small circa 1.5cm repaired area touched in at right of the subject's hand, a tiny paper loss in the blue at right of the neck, a circa 4cm horizontal repaired tear at upper right edge, a horizontal crease along upper left edge, small handling creases in the margins, minor repaired tears at edges, very pale paper discoloration at extreme edges of sheet, backed with a thin sheet of japan paper, a thin band of archival tape along the extreme upper edge recto, framed.
